This project does this work by collecting stories of immigrants and of Finns of various origins on what it means to have a multicultural society as told and lived in the diverse neighborhood of Varissuo. In their stories, some of the immigrants discuss challenges and joys of living in Finland, and how they use the knowledge and skills they bring from their countries of origin to build their lives in Finland. By sharing their stories, immigrants discuss and reflect on their perspectives on how they have come to find a sense of belonging in Finland and making the country their home.

The process of story-telling also is a way to build bridges between the many kinds of people who live in Finland.

We invite you to listen to these stories and gain a deeper understanding of the ways immigrants become a part of the fabric of Finland but also how they contribute to Finland as a nation and its culture.

Together-association organizes rehabilitative work for long-term unemployed immigrants based on the service-voucher model. At present our service is only for Turku residents.

The rehabilitative work is guided by the City of Turku and social services in cooperation with the TE Office. The client must have an updated multidisciplinary employment plan. When the person’s own clerk contacts the association, the client can be given an appointment.

The association organizes individual and group rehabilitation work. Individual rehabilitation work always begins with 3 months and can be extended for up to 24 months with the approval of the City of Turku and the TE Office. Group-based rehabilitative work always lasts only 3 months, after which it is possible for the customer to switch to individual rehabilitative work.

The group-based rehabilitative work includes studying Finnish with the guidance of an S2-qualified Finnish teacher. Group-based rehabilitative work takes place 2 times a week, 2-3 hours a day, after which the group participates in the daily rhythm of individual-based rehabilitative work. The customers are served daily lunch.

In the individual rehabilitative work, the main jobs are crafts and sewing. The customers maintain a small-scale sewing service where anyone can bring their fabrics or clothing, for example to repair, cut, shorten, customize, button change or zipper change.

Finnish is used in all social interaction. Both sewing instructions and social guidance are given in Finnish.

Daily exercise such as chair exercise, outdoor activities, and light aerobics are part of the daily routine. It is also possible for the customers to participate in the organization of various events and other activities of the association. Additional information: Tiia Bäcklund

You can get employment support through the Together-association. The association has a rehabilitation work activity, which can be accessed by contacting the City of Turku or TE Office. It is possible for the association to hire a few people for different work assignments. The Association has several pay subsidy employees every year. Individuals can come on Fridays to seek employment assistance.

The Rehabilitation Work of the Together-association is aimed at long-term unemployed immigrants in Turku.

The TE Office can inform you about employers who could provide a place for you. The work try-out is a good option when you need to figure out your career options or you need support to get back on the job market. The work try-out is always based on the unemployed person’s needs. After you have made the contract, you can start your work try-out. The maximum amount of time for the work try-out is 6 months.

The Together-association employs a few people each year through the work-trial program. It can be done, for example, by guiding groups in the intercultural activities, guiding craft groups in rehabilitative work, teaching assistance, working as a kitchen assistant or as a cleaning assistant. The employees work approximately 4-6 hours a day 5 days a week, during either the morning or evening shift. The work try-out contract is tailored to the individual’s needs.

The pay subsidy is an economic benefit that a TE Office may grant an employer to cover pay costs of an unemployed jobseeker. The granting of pay subsidy is subject to an estimation made by the TE Office that the jobseeker’s unemployment is caused by the lack of professional competence, and work supported by the pay subsidy will enhance the jobseeker’s professional competence and opportunities to find work in the open labour market. Although a pay subsidy is granted and paid to the employer, the granting of the subsidy is always based on the unemployed jobseeker’s need for the service.

For pay subsidy assistance please contact Aida Bacic: aida.bacic@yhdessa.fi 044 744 5525.

On Fridays, the staff of the association is there to assist with CVs, adult student homework, job search, school placement, residence permits, and other official matters. You can book an appointment before Fridays or arrive directly.

Info Friday at the Together-association the Intercultural Center, Nisse Kavon katu 3, 20610 TURKU is available every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As a volunteer for the Together Association, you can promote immigrants’ integration and further interaction between native Finns and immigrants. As a volunteer, you can experience a multicultural and intercultural environment, and have the opportunity to meet interesting people.

There are many ways to do volunteer work for the Together Association. You can do something only once or sign up for something requiring a longer commitment, as well as everything in between! Any suitable volunteer work will be tailored to each individual’s wishes, life situation, skills, and know-how.

As a volunteer you can, for example:

a) act as a hobby group leader, teach in language groups or work as an assistant

b) help adult immigrant students with their homework and studies

c) act as a babysitter for small children while immigrant mothers are studying Finnish

d) lead a hobby group of a particular theme that is based on your own special skills

e) help to organize events and festivals or perform on stage

f) be a member of our association and take active part in its management.

You can also suggest your own way to do volunteer work. While volunteering you will be supported by the coordinator of volunteer work and by other fellow volunteers of the Together Association.

How to get started?

Before you can start volunteering, we interview you and brief you for volunteer work.

We want to make sure that volunteer work for the Together Association suits you and your life situation. We require our volunteer workers to be genuinely willing to help and to be interested in multicultural work.

If you are interested please contact Terhi Toppala, the coordinator of volunteer work: terhi.toppala@yhdessa.org

The Together-association hosts a 300 square-meter premises on the ground floor of the Varissuo Library. (The address is Nisse Kavon katu 3, 20610 Turku.) The Association is open from dawn until dusk, and on weekends/evenings, it is guarded by our doormen. Inside the premises there is a hall suitable for small parties, gym or dance, two classrooms, a well-equipped computer class, a meeting room, offices, and a kitchen. Other associations and interest groups can borrow the hall, the classrooms, and the kitchen for their own cultural activities when there is availability on the schedule. The organized activities must meet the values of the Together-association. They must promote equality and inclusion. Everyone should be able to express themselves freely, be themselves, and feel involved in all activities.

The weekly time slots/reservations are arranged twice a year with the next time being in August 2020. In addition, premises are distributed for non-recurring events when possible.

The activities organized on our premises must be free from charge and open for all. Our rooms may not be reserved for private events or family gatherings.
